Rodney Walker Sr. Obituary, Georgia Football Coach, Mentor, and Pillar of Newnan Community Has Died, at 300-Win Career Milestone

NEWNAN, Ga. — Rodney Walker Sr., one of Georgia high school football’s most accomplished and respected coaches, has died at the age of 79, leaving behind a coaching legacy defined by more than 300 career victories and decades of influence across multiple programs in the state.

Walker spent more than four decades coaching football in Georgia, serving at several schools including West Rome, Stephens County, Peach County, Sandy Creek, and Mary Persons. He retired after the 2011 season with 300-plus wins, placing him among the winningest coaches in state history.

His career highlight came in 1984, when he led West Rome to a state championship in his lone season with the program. Over the years, he also guided multiple teams deep into the state playoffs, building a reputation for consistency and program development rather than short-term success.

Walker later became widely recognized for his time at Sandy Creek High School, where he helped establish one of Georgia’s strongest football programs of the 2000s. He also mentored players who went on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels, including NFL Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson.

In addition to his on-field record, Walker is remembered for his coaching tree and influence across Georgia high school football, with former assistants and players describing him as a foundational figure in the sport’s modern era in the state.

His son, Chip Walker, also became a successful head coach and later led Newnan High School’s football program, continuing the family’s presence in Georgia athletics.

The Walker family has requested privacy as they mourn his passing. Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced.
